Nutrition that maximizes cannabis plant productivity

Cannabis growers have not benefited from the scientific knowledge in plant nutrition and the rigorous standards that have been enjoyed by leading horticulture and vegetable growers. Cannabis operations have mostly been small and covert with suppliers providing low specification “secret formulations” of plant foods that contain “magic” ingredients.

In actuality, growing cannabis is similar to growing other high value plants. Care needs to be taken to optimize the nutrition according to the characteristics of the water, growing medium, growth stage and the plant characteristics required at harvest.

Sophisticated growers of cannabis require control of plant characteristics

The number one requirement is high productivity of large buds. Sophisticated growers require plants to grow fast and strong, so energy requirements are minimized, the plants resist pests, and the level of active ingredients in the harvested buds is maximized.

Accuracy is critical. In order to safeguard the crop and maximize productivity, the listed ingredients on the fertilizer label must be precise. Since purity of ingredients is key, exact levels of each micronutrient must be present, with no unwanted contaminants or fillers.

Solubility is important. The fertilizer needs to dissolve completely so it can be taken up by the plant minimizing waste and runoff, which is adverse for the environment. Complete solubility also means that lines, nozzles, and fertigation equipment do not clog, and require less frequent cleaning.

Lastly, formulations have to be suitable for the conditions. The compositions of the water and growing medium need to be taken into account, particularly their pH. The correct nutritional formula needs to be used for each of the plants growth stages.

One of the key benefits of using Plant-Prod Water Soluble Fertilizers is our support, which we achieve through a highly experienced network of dealers, and a knowledgeable head office support staff. If you require assistance, please email or call us.

A water test will determine the bicarbonate level, pH and nutrient levels. Based on your water analysis, Plant-Prod will determine which fertilizer will work best. Presuming a pH of 6 – 6.2 the following pre-mixed formulations are generally optimal.

1Seedling Germination and Starting (week 1)

Apply Plant-Prod MJ™ Boost at 0.07 oz per 1 gallon (75 ppm N) once or twice to ensure adequate phosphorous levels. This will provide a good initial boost to the roots.

Vegetative Growth (week 2-3)

Lighting during this phase is generally 24 hours. Fertilize with Plant-Prod MJ™ Grow at 0.11 – 0.16 oz per 1 gallon (100-150 ppm N) on a constant feeding schedule. If EC levels drop below 1, increase the feed to 200 ppm N. Monitor EC and pH during the full crop cycle.

Rotation with Plant-Prod MJ™ Cal Kick every second feeding is recommended. The requirement for this supplement should be determined by water sample results, provided by your Plant-Prod sales representative.

Bud Set (week 4)

Lighting should be switched to 12 hours on, and 12 hours dark. In order to help the plants set buds, or when the buds are pea sized, feed once or twice with Plant-Prod MJ™ Boost at 0.13 oz per 1 gallon (150 ppm N). Continue rotation with Plant-Prod MJ™ Cal Kick as needed.

Bud Sizing (week 5-10)

Lighting should continue at 12 hours on, and 12 hours dark. Begin continuous feeding with Plant-Prod MJ™ Bloom at 0.13 – 0.2 oz per 1 gallon (100-150 ppm N). This will encourage full bud set and enhance bud filling. Continue rotation with Plant-Prod MJ™ Cal Kick as needed.

Finishing (week 11-14)

Plant-Prod MJ™ Finisher will help with plant finishing when applied at 0.08 oz per 1 gallon (25 ppm N, 200 ppm P2O5). The higher phosphorous and potassium will benefit the plants in their reproductive stage through to finishing. Switch to clear water 14 days before harvest.
